Sharaf Group breaks into ice market

Sharaf Group has opened Dubai's first ice lounge at the Times Square Centre mall.

Sharaf Group has opened Dubai's first ice lounge at the Times Square Centre mall.

The bar serves non-alcoholic beverages and its interior features walls, tables and chairs all made from ice, 7ft high ice chandeliers and a coloured ice portrait of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum.

"There are very few ice lounges in the world, and they're mainly in places with cold climates, so the idea of building one in Dubai was a challenge," commented Ibrahim Sharaf, chairman, Sharaf Group.

Customers are provided with thermal clothing on arrival, before stepping into an air lock that leads to the frozen inner sanctum. The capacity is strictly confined to 45 customers though to prevent body heat from damaging the pristine surface of the ice blocks.

Vaibhav Tandel, project manager for Sharaf Group said patrons will be advised to stay for a maximum of 40 minutes, and that the wide variety of cocktails have been designed with heat generating ingredients. He also revealed that the company plans to expand the concept to other parts of the Middle East.
