The Sharjah Municipality has fined 83 stores for violating hygiene standards as part of a month-long campaign.

About 720kg of various foodstuffs was also confiscated during the crackdown on supermarkets, news agency WAM reported on Sunday.

It said inspectors working for the Food Control Section of the Department of Health visited about 1,200 locations during the campaign to inspect all grocery stores and supermarkets.

The municipality urged retail operators to ensure their storage and preservation of food maintained standards to preserve the safety of consumers.

It did not name the retailers fined or give further details about the value of the penalties imposed.
