Should I… hire a graphic designer?

Arabian Business StartUp presents the advantages - and disadvantages - of hiring a graphic designer

Should I… hire a graphic designer?
Graphic designers could do your branding, put together shop designs, help cost design work, give creative direction and keep you abreast of latest trends.

What does a graphic
designer do exactly?

In terms of a start-up business, a graphic designer could do
many things – depending on what sector you’re in, of course.

They could do your
branding, put together shop designs, help cost design work, give creative
direction, keep you abreast of latest trends, design your advertising, and so
on.

That sounds
expensive.

Prices range, as does quality, and there’s obviously a
difference if you’re hiring on a one-off basis or hiring a full time member of
staff. But you would have to look at it as an investment because a good graphic
designer can really help your business.

Just think how many more customers
would come to your shop if it has had a professional designer working on it.

So it’s worth it?

In many cases yes, but there are also alternatives.

Some
people would argue that some graphic designers cover a lot of aspects of
design, without being an expert on one particular thing.

If this is accurate,
then it might be better to hire an expert for each specific job – if you can
afford it, of course.

Again, it comes down to the designer themselves. You
could be saving a lot of money if you have one excellent employee working on
everything.

When is a good time
to hire one?

If your sector is a highly visual one, then it might be
better to get a graphic designer in from the beginning – if only in an advisory
capacity, or to set you off on the right course.

In other cases, a good time
might be when you’re about to embark on a long-term advertising campaign, and
you need a pro to help you out.

Can’t I just do it
myself?

If you’re confident about your own ability, then possibly
yes.

If the skill you’re brining to the business is design or creativity
orientated, then you might need to hire somebody to fill other gaps, such as
finance or marketing.

But you need to be honest with yourself. If you bring
other, non-design-based qualities to the business, then you should at least
consider it.
