Six female students have been injured in a fire that broke out at Sultan Qaboos University (SQU) at the weekend, according to local Omani media.

It is the second fire to have erupted at an Oman university in the past six months.

The Times of Oman reported that six students at SQU suffered breathing difficulties when the fire broke out in an SQU hostel, and were taken to hospital on Saturday night.

Oman’s Public Authority for Civil Defense and Ambulances tweeted: “The fire broke in the girls’ hostel. Six suffered breathing difficulty.”

The fire was reportedly brought under control in a short period of time.

In May another six female students sustained minor injuries after a fire broke out in the female restroom at Sohar University.

It took emergency services two hours to douse the fire, Gulf News reported at the time Faulty electrics were later blamed for the incident.
