The success of Shilpa Shetty’s Indian ready meal range, due to be launched in Dubai next year, has been met with some skepticism by respondents of a recent online poll.

The survey by Arabian Business found that 47.9 percent of respondents said they would rather get a curry delivered from their local Indian restaurant.

However, 23.9 percent said they would buy the ready meals “now and again”, but that would depend on how nice they were.

The Bollywood actress and model is planning to launch a range of “healthy, authentic” convenience meals in the emirate in the New Year.

Indian expats make up about 33 percent of the UAE population, and as such there are a variety of Indian restaurants across the city catering for all price ranges.

Some 6.9 percent of people who took part in the survey said they thought the meals would be popular. They said they were too busy to cook for themselves, so these dishes would be “ideal”.

The ready meals will also be less than 10 percent fat, the celebrity wrote on her blog.

A total of 21.2 percent of respondents said they did not like to eat curry.

Shetty and her partner Raj Kundra acquired a stake in the V8 Gourmet Group, one of the UK’s biggest Indian restaurant groups, which includes The Bombay Bicycle Club Kitchens, Tiffinbites, and Vama restaurants.

The firm is launching two Tiffinbites in Dubai soon and the ready meal range in the New Year, a spokesman for the company has confirmed.

It’s not a question of variety, taste, or 10% less fat. More like how much preservative, how much sodium, how many chemicals going into our bodies for the sake of convenience. Besides I highly doubt that Ms Shetty has ever tasted these meals and to buy the product merely because her glamorous image may appear on the packet make us as the consumer truly gullible!

oh please! like anyone in Dubai eats frozen ready meals! And 10% fat? Thats a HUGE amount of fat - isnt it supposed to be under 5% to be healthy???? She would have been better off putting her name to an 'uncle bens' type sauce and leaving it at that
