SKMC gets ambient lab

Sheikh Khalifa Medical City (SKMC), received a boost with the news that its state-of-the-art Cardiac Sciences Department has become a regional reference site for Philips Ambient Experience Cath Lab, echocardiography and cardiovascular information solutions.

Sheikh Khalifa Medical City (SKMC), received a boost with the news that its state-of-the-art Cardiac Sciences Department has become a regional reference site for Philips Ambient Experience Cath Lab, echocardiography and cardiovascular information solutions.

SKMC, which is managed by Cleveland Clinic and Royal Philips Electronics, will benefit from the installation of a cath lab solution from Philips that includes the Allura Xper FD 20/10 Witt, Philips' Hemodynamic system. The site is expected to be operational this month.

With its cardiac department already providing a wealth of cardiac services and specialties, the cath lab with its ambient design will offer the opportunity for a more personal approach to patient care. It's an installation that has been warmly welcomed by SKMC's cardiology team.

"The new ambient cardiac cath lab will be another step to fulfilling our vision of leading the way in cardiovascular care," commented Dr. Wael Almahmeed, Chair of Adult Cardiology.

Meanwhile, Dr. Nazar Albustani Director of Invasive Cardiology explained: "the new ambient experience cardiac cath lab will add to our excellence in Adult Interventional Cardiology by improving efficiency and patient comfort."

The Ambient Experience offered by the Philips solution includes architecture, design and enabling technologies, such as lighting, sound, projection and RFID, with the aim of enabling patients to customise their environment and surroundings to enhance their comfort levels and ability to relax.

The cath lab also breaks down the barriers between hospital staff and patients by minimising the need for physical separations.

"Hospitals can be at a competitive advantage if their patients' experience is pleasant, which is why we've created an experience that helps relax the patient," said Diederik Zeven, General Manager Middle East for Philips Healthcare.

"By incorporating leading-edge design elements, advanced medical technology, sophisticated lighting and consumer-friendly electronics, the Philips Ambient Experience creates a soothing and pleasing environment for hospital patients of all ages."

Aside from the ambient benefits to patients, the Allura Xper FD 20/10 bi-plane imaging system aids the accuracy of imaging by providing advanced positioning capabilities and integrated 3D imaging for intricate neurovascular procedures.

As a result, clinicians can see the smallest of vessels. This in turn benefits the treatment plan for patients as 3D-vessel information can be provided in ‘real-time'. It can also reduce procedure time, dose and contrast with its technology that allows teams to navigate through complex vasculature quickly and with ease.

While the cath lab is a huge benefit to Sheikh Khalifa Medical City, it is also keen to extend the benefits of the lab to a much wider regional audience. Dr. Scott Strong, Acting CEO of Sheikh Khalifa Medical City explained: "with its combination of technology leadership and focus on the needs of the patient, our new cath lab is rightly being recognised as a groundbreaking installation in the region.

We're looking forward to sharing insights on how we're improving the experience of both our physicians and our patients with our peers in the region."

The lab installation is another step towards enhancing patient facilities and care at SKMC and in the emirate of Abu Dhabi. SKMC's Department of Cardiac Sciences already provides an extensive range of cardiac services including non-invasive Cardiology, interventional Cardiology, Electrophysiology, and Cardiac Surgery through its seven divisions that include Adult Cardiology.

The hospital also points out that the introduction of the lab is yet another sign of its commitment, and also that of Abu Dhabi Health Services Company - SEHA and Cleveland Clinic to developing world class healthcare facilities and delivering leading patient care.
