Sky Electronics - the company which initially brought AMD to the Middle East market through its wholesale business Thacker Distribution - is scaling down its distribution relationship with the vendor.
The move is designed to allow Sky to focus more on its PC integration capabilities, which currently remain a key focus area for the company.
Sky has signed deals to supply 13 UAE retail outlets with its PCs since May and is committed to strengthening its presence in the SMB segment and tender business.
AMD is understood to back the move and has appointed a dedicated person to assist Sky in managing retail accounts. Sky will source products through AMD's remaining distributors and will negotiate pricing with AMD for project-based deals.
"AMD is really supporting us and realises that it is better to focus on the strength of Sky than pushing somebody to do something that they aren't happy to do," said Manoj Thacker, managing director at Sky Electronics.
Thacker also points out that the decision to exit the CPU distribution space does not signify the dilution of its components wholesale business. He says the firm will maintain its focus on the distribution of products such as memory, LCD monitors and VGA cards.
