4,000 foreign visitors are expected to travel to Abu Dhabi for UFC 242 alone
Approximately 40 percent of all tickets sold for UFC 242 and other Abu Dhabi Showdown Week events have been sold to international fans, according to Fatima Saeed Al Baloushi, the events calendar planning and development manager of the Abu Dhabi Events Bureau, part of DCT Abu Dhabi.
In an interview with Arabian Business, Al Baloushi said that while the week’s events are expected to attract “huge” numbers of the UAE’s resident population, “the city-wide programme will drive substantial tourism and leisure-related business across the emirate’s tourism industry during late summer.”
Al Baloushi said that over 4,000 foreign-based visitors are expected to travel to Abu Dhabi for UFC 242 alone.
Among the other events planned are the Abu Dhabi Sport and Fitness Expo, a dedicated B2B platform, as well as a Jiu-Jitsu tournament. Many of Abu Dhabi’s malls and retail destinations are also offering discounts, promotions and bumper deals.
“This holistic entertainment schedule will ensure that international visitors – and local residents alike – experience a dynamic Abu Dhabi Showdown Week programme that lets all fans experience the emirate’s diverse entertainment and nightlife proposition,” Al Baloushi added.
In the future, Al Baloushi said that DCT Abu Dhabi hopes to “evolve” the Showdown Week and enhance the series of events held in the capital for the event.
She added that the event is expected to have an important impact on Abu Dhabi’s economy and bolster tourism figures in the future.
“This is the first event in our new five-year partnership with UFC and we are determined to evolve Abu Dhabi’s UFC association into a cornerstone of the emirate’s thriving events calendar,” she said.
“Securing an annual date for this spectacular MMA event, which has a huge following around the world and in several of Abu Dhabi’s major international source markets, will bring heightened impetus to visitation and boost incoming tourist numbers.
"The UAE capital and UFC share a vision to cement Abu Dhabi as the undisputed home of MMA in the Arab World,” she added.
