Stevie Wonder cancels show at Israel Defense Forces fundraiser

Veteran singer and United Nations Messenger of Peace Stevie Wonder has canceled a planned performance for the Friends of the Israel Defense Forces after several organizations asked him not to perform.

The soul singer, 62, was scheduled to sing at a December 6 fundraising gala in Los Angeles hosted by the Friends of the Israel Defense Forces (FIDF), an organisation set up to help those serving in the Israel Defense Forces and families of fallen soldiers.

"Given the current and very delicate situation in the Middle East, and with a heart that has always cried out for world unity, I will not be performing at the FIDF Gala," Wonder said in a statement sent to Reuters by his spokeswoman.

Wonder said he would make contributions to organisations that support Israeli and Palestinian children with disabilities.

The singer added that as a Messenger of Peace, a title he's held since 2009, "I am and have always been against war, any war, anywhere."

According to a statement from the US Campaign to End the Israeli Occupation, a coalition that aims to change US policy toward Palestine and Israel and support human rights and equality, Wonder's decision came after a "growing outcry" from several organizations and three international signed petitions.

The protest is part of a "cultural boycott" led by organisations that oppose Israel's occupation of Palestinian territories, the statement said.

I hadn't realised the Americans still think it okay to have fundraising events to give money to armed groups who kill civilians. They used to do it for the IRA, who said thankyou and used the cash to blow up people in Ireland, and it seems no lesson was learned. Funny how people can't see the identical nature of funding Al Qaeda to kill people and doing the same with the IDF. Is it just a case of wearing a proper uniform and lobbying the right people on Capitol Hill? Is that all that's needed to "legitimise" money for bullets?

I am very proud of Stevie Wonder's decision. Finally someone in the US makes a stand that is fair and just, a decision that supports peace regardless of which side.

The Isreali people need to realize this policy puts their people at risk in the same way American Foregin policy puts Americans at risk. Having said that however, this does not mean I condone terrositic acts.

I also like the comment above - how true! Eventually, it was dialogue with the IRA that put an end to the troubles in Ireland, in the same as in South Africa.

To this day it occupies Jerusalem,Part of West bank & Gaza.It has built numerous settlements in Gaza & West bank. The settlements snake around Palestine like a wall and make movements highly uneasy & painful. The world is unaware as to what atrocities, brutality & tortures the Palestinians are undergoing
