Sub $100 notebook coming to UAE

JoinTech to launch JL7100 notebook at $99 for bulk orders, $149 retail

JoinTech has announced that it is bringing a new contender for the title of World’s cheapest laptop to the UAE.

The Hong Kong hardware company says that it will begin sales of its JL7100 notebook in Dubai in the middle of September, with prices for bulk orders as low as $99 a piece.

The announcement follows on from the local launch of Carapelli’s Impulse NPX 7000 last week, which is available in bulk for $129, or retails at AED 699 ($190). JoinTech’s machine will sell for AED 550 ($149) according to a report in Gulf News.

JoinTech says that the new notebook is not only cheaper than any other similar notebooks in the market, but also lighter at 680g.

The notebook packs a 400MHz processor, but only 64MB of RAM and ROM, relying on a 4GB SD card for storage. The JL7100 also doesn’t run a true PC operating system, using Win CE 5.0, Microsoft’s operating system for devices such as PDAs or terminals. The notebook has a 7 inch VGA screen and 3 USB ports.

The company is initially importing 1,000 units, and is expecting to sell 25,000 units in the Gulf this year. The bulk order price of $99 is only available for purchases of 5,000 units or more.
