Sudan’s three year plan to hit million bpd

Sudan wants to double its crude oil output to one million barrels per day (bpd) in two to three years, said Angelina Jany Tany, the country’s junior minister for energy and minerals.

Sudan wants to double its crude oil output to one million barrels per day (bpd) in two to three years, said Angelina Jany Tany, the country’s junior minister for energy and minerals.

But the country will need at least until the end of 2007 to recover from the fallout of years of civil war. As such, Tany stressed there would be little immediate change to Sudan’s current crude production rate of 500,000 bpd.

“In two to three years we are looking at maximising [production], hopefully doubling it,” she said.

The proposed increase has been made possible by the end of a 21-year period of civil war affecting Sudan’s two main oilfields. Industry experts have said the region could hold hundreds of millions of barrels of recoverable reserves.

Sudan’s oil revenues suffered when many Western oil companies pulled out of the country during the north-south war because of the resulting human rights abuses.

The Thar Jath field in Block 5A, which came on stream last June, was due to reach 60,000 bpd by the end of 2006, but to date only yields 33,000 bpd. India’s Oil and Natural Gas Corp. (ONGC) has a 24.125% interest in the Thar Jath field.

ONGC attributed the delays in reaching full capacity to transmission issues, which may prevent the fields from reaching a 50,000 bpd plateau by the end of this year.
