Sun launch entry-level server range

Sun Microsystems has staked a claim to the entry-level Wintel/Lintel market, with the release of its new Cobalt and Netra server ranges

Sun has released the first products in its range of entry-level server appliances and thin servers. The Sun Cobalt family, aimed at ISPs and corporate users, is the the first product to come from Sun’s acquisition of Cobalt September 2000.The Cobalt releases are intended as part of Sun’s Internet data centre strategy, and include the Sun Cobalt CacheRaQ4, for web caching, and the RaQ XTR, an easy to use, fast deployment server appliance, with integrated database and development tools.Sun has also released a sub-$1000 rack-optimised Unix RISC server aimed at the service provider market. The Netra range is intended to provide cheap, space-saving functionality. Sun is heralding the Netra X1 server as the cheapest general use Unix server on the market, which is adaptable to a variety of tasks. The Netra range has also been expanded with the Netra T1 thin server and the Netra E1 PCI system expander for increasing server connectivity.“Nobody is in a better position than Sun to deliver on every layer of the Internet,” said Johann Muller, product manager for Sun Microsystems Middle East Africa. “From hardware to software, SPs and corporate customers count on us to deliver complete end-to-end solutions for building out their data centres. With the new products Sun is putting on Wintel-Lintel in this multi-billion dollar market and we intend to take full advantage of this opportunity in the Middle East.”
