Tatweer picks FSC to build datacenter

Tatweer, the agency behind Dubailand and other mega-projects in the emirate, has implemented a datacentre solution from Fujitsu-Siemens Computers.

Tatweer, the agency behind Dubailand and other mega-projects in the emirate, has implemented a datacentre solution from Fujitsu-Siemens Computers.

The system, based around Fujitsu-Siemens' FlexFrame architecture, went live on July 1 this year - just six months after the start of the project. Tatweer's management had decided to make the agency's IT systems independent from those of its parent organisation, Dubai Holding.

"With a fixed timeframe in which to disengage our IT operations and run our own data centre, we decided to take a fresh approach to the project and implement something that would help Tatweer derive the most benefit from our Oracle eBusiness Suite implementation," says Dean Polley, director of IT at Tatweer.

"A primary criterion for selection was the solution's ability to rapidly scale the infrastructure upward in line with the fast growth of the company."

The Dubai organisation looked at a number of different vendor systems before selecting Fujitsu-Siemens, according to Polley. He said options from Sun Microsystems and IBM appeared attractive, but the Fujitsu-Siemens offering combined a low initial outlay with a complete solution that incorporated Oracle's ERP software.

"We chose equipment based on Fujitsu- Siemens Computers' blade server technology and Network Appliance storage infrastructure. The company's solution for Oracle was radically different, but at the same time met our business requirements.

A visit to Hof in Germany to see the Fujitsu-Siemens Computers systems in operation convinced us of the solution's viability for our operations, and the company's capability to deliver and meet project timelines," Polley adds.

Due to Tatweer's approach to project planning and fast decision-making processes, the organisation got the project underway soon after receiving final quotations.
