Mervat Tallawy is perhaps one of Egypt’s most recognisable female figures. She is a former under secretary general of the UN, and has also served as deputy director of the UN International Research and Training Institute for the Advancement of Women. Tallawy was Egypt’s Minister for Insurance and Social Affairs and served as ambassador to Japan and Austria.  More recently, Tallawy was elected as the head of the National Council for Egyptian Women. She is a member of the 50-strong committee which is in charge of amending Egypt’s constitution.
