Tahany El Gebali made history in 2003 when she was appointed Egypt’s first female judge. She was also the first woman to be elected to the Permanent Bureau of the Union of Arab Lawyers. Born in 1951, El Gebali received her law degree from the University of Cairo in 1973. She came to national prominence after a series of high-profile cases in which she acted for the defendant. El Gebali has been a proponent of women’s rights and freedom of expression throughout her long career. More recently, she has been appointed as deputy president of Egypt’s Supreme Constitutional Court.
