Souhayr Belhassen served as the first female president of the Paris-based International Federation of Human Rights between 2007 and 2013. She was a trenchant critic of former Tunisian president Zine Al Abidine Ben Ali. She also wrote a biography of Tunisia’s founding president, Habib Bourguiba, which was subsequently banned. She was also honoured by French president Francois Hollande in 2012. “One word defines you: independence,” Hollande told Belhassen during her investiture.
