Samira Islam

Industry: Science

Designation: Scientist

Country: Saudi Arabia

Professor Samira Islam has won an impressive number of firsts; first Saudi woman to gain both bachelor and doctorate degrees; first Saudi of either gender to become a professor in pharmacology; the first Arab woman to be nominated as one of UNESCO’s Scientists of the Year; and the first Saudi woman to hold an official position at the World Health Organisation. In addition to all of that, Islam has been a driving force behind allowing women to enter further education in Saudi Arabia, and was the first female vice dean in a Saudi university. Few people have done more to advance the cause of female education in Saudi Arabia.
