Last January, Dr Amal Al Qubaisi made history by becoming the first woman to chair a session of the UAE’s Federal National Council (FNC), when she deputised for speaker Mohammed Al Murr. A former architect, who has worked to document and preserve some of the UAE’s most impressive heritage sites,  Al Qubaisi represents Abu Dhabi on the FNC, with a special interest in education and young people’s issues. The council serves as the advisory body to the government. In 2009, Al Qubaisi was the first woman elected to the council. She was head of the UAE delegation to a conference for women parliamentarians in the GCC in 2007.
