Company: El Mandara
Entrepreneur Hanan Solayman is bringing media to Egypt’s masses. The young freelance journalist is the founder of the Mandara Media Foundation, which aims to create news websites and media platforms in underserved communities in rural Egypt.
Launched in 2012, Mandara’s first project was to train 90 journalists in Upper Egypt (the southern part of the country), allowing them to contribute to a local portal covering all 11 districts in the area.
Mandara’s plan is to “build a leading model of independent and non-profit local journalism starting from Upper Egypt to engage citizens outside the capital in society; localities are the key to real change and fighting corruption”.
Solayman studied entrepreneurial journalism at the City University of New York, where she was a Tow Knight Fellow. She is also a frequent contributor to the Wamda website, which is dedicated to entrepreneurs, as well as many regional news sites.
