While celebrated author Ahlam Mosteghanemi may have been born in Tunis, she is very much hailed as a daughter of Algeria. She is so far the only female Algerian author writing in Arabic to be published in English, and her trilogy — featuring Memory in the Flesh, Chaos of the Senses and Black Suits You So Well — have been very well received by Western audiences. After studying at the Sorbonne in Paris, she moved to Beirut.
Mosteghanemi has won a host of awards, including the Naguib Mahfouz prize for Memory of the Flesh in 1998.
