Company: Ewa’a Centre for Women and Children
Sarah Shuhail has helped save several hundred women and girls from sex trafficking and prostitution since opening the Ewa’a Shelter for Women and Children in 2008. Her work has drawn attention to the crime of forced prostitution and helped victims return to a normal life.
Victims, who are either rescued or escaped from brothels, are given psychological and medical care and legal support, while their rehabilitation also includes activities such as handicrafts, swimming and drawing.
The threat of human trafficking is not, of course, restricted to the UAE, but the country faces a particular problem in that there are only 300 inspectors monitoring the 4 million strong workforce.
