Tony Blair's sister-in-law confirms conversion to Islam

Lauren Booth hopes to change the Middle East peace envoy's presumptions about Islam

Tony Blair's sister-in-law confirms conversion to Islam
Cherie Booth has accused Tony Blair of a bias towards Israel in his Middle East politics

Lauren Booth, the sister-in-law of former British prime minister and Middle East peace envoy Tony Blair, has converted to Islam following a visit to Iran.

The 43-year-old Booth, half sister of Cherie Blair, said she is now a “proud member” of the Muslim community, after having what she described as a “holy experience” during a visit to the shrine of Fatima al-Masumeh in the city of Qom.

She said that when she was in Iran, "I sat down and felt this shot of spiritual morphine, just absolute bliss and joy."

Speaking to the Mail on Sunday after a multi-faith Global Peace and Unity Event in London, Booth said: "What I wanted to share with you today is that I am Lauren Booth and I am a Muslim.

"I always felt that the Ummah (Muslim community) is a very loving, peaceful place and I am proud to be a member of it.

Booth said she now wears a hijab when she leaves her home, prays five times a day and visits her local mosque whenever she can.

‘I was always impressed with the strength and comfort it gave,’ she said of the religion.

Booth, who works for the English language Iranian news channel Press TV, has been a vocal critic of her brother-in-law, accusing him of bias towards Israel in his role as Middle East peace envoy.

She said she hoped her conversion would change his presumptions about Islam.

In an open letter in the newspaper Morning Star last month, she wrote: "Personally I've never understood this fear of 'political Islam'.

"It seems to me that religious people should always be educated on world events rather than kept in ignorance. Like, say, Midwest Christian Zionists in the US."

Booth was refused entry to Israel and Egypt after travelling from Cyprus to Gaza on an activist ship which was protesting the blockade of Palestinian territory.

Word "Islam" is derived fro an Arabic word called "Sa'lam which mean "Peace". Whenever a Muslim met with a fellow Muslim they always pass "Asalaam o Alaykum"(greeting) which literary mean "May Allah's Peace Be Upon You"

Asalaam o Alaykum on whole world

I agree with Salahuddin, except for one little detail. The greeting "Asalaam o Alaykum" is not only used whenever a Muslim meets another Muslim. It is a greeting that can be used with anyone, whether Muslim or not. It is a blessing - and non-discriminatory. Whether it is God, Allah, or one of the many other names for one and the same being, He doesn't discriminate between brothers and sisters around the world depending on their background, wealth, skin colour, health or other discerning factor.

As long as you are not directly and willfully doing harm to others - "Asalaam o Alaykum" to you and the world.

BTW she still maintains her Christian identity...her name. Is she portraying a dual identity one to the West and other to the Islamic world? Also, whichever faith one practices should be personal and not taken to the street.

Dear Sister LAUREN BOOTH please accept my hearty congratulation for the acceptance of Islam. Amuslim cannot be a muslim unless he/she believes in all prophets of Allah the Almighty. Allah bless you in this world and paradise will be your dwelling hereafter. Hope that you will be a good preacher of Islam not only in UK but also in the world.
