Vehicle charging points are being installed permanently along the route of the January's 1,217-kilometre Electric Vehicle Road Trip Middle East
A new network of more than 18 electric vehicle charging points will be established in the UAE and Oman to power the vehicles taking part in the upcoming 2018 Electric Vehicle Road Trip (EVRT) Middle East, the event’s organisers have announced.
GreenParkin, global EVRT’s official charging station partner, will oversee the construction and supply of the stations as well as other infrastructure along the 1,217-kilometre route of the event, which takes place between January 18 and 26.
The new charging stations will set up at locations in the UAE and Oman, including the Crowne Plaza Yas Island, Crowne Plaza Sohar, Crowne Plaza Muscat, InterContinental Muscat and InterContinental Fujairah. They will remain in place after the event to expand on current electric-vehicle infrastructure.
“The Electric Vehicle Road Trip Middle East is an important step towards bringing zero emission vehicles to the forefront of the public’s attention and our extended charging station network will help to showcase these fantastic cars as sustainable and practical alternatives to petrol vehicles,” said Sam Alawiye, CEO of GreenParking.
Alawiye added that electric vehicles “are the future of transport and will soon be a common sight on the UAE’s roads.”
The new stations will be officially opened as vehicles participating in the EVRT Middle East event reach locations in Abu Dhabi, Fujairah, Ras Al Khaimah, as well as in Sohar and Muscat in Oman.
Additionally, Chevrolet – the official electric vehicle partner for EVRT Middle East – will be providing three new Chevrolet Bolt EV models for EVRT participants by offering them a chance to test drive the vehicles in desert conditions a year before they go on sale in the region.
“The demand for electric vehicles is expanding globally each year, and the UAE is well positioned to be a strong market for low emission cars thanks to events such as the EVRT Middle East,” said Gary West, Urban Active Operations Manager of GM International. “At Chevrolet, we are proud to bring the Chevrolet Bolt EV to the region, which we know will form the backbone of the electric vehicle fleet.”
Ben Pullen, the Managing Director of Global EVRT, said that the establishment of the charging stations along the route demonstrates “that these cars are not just environmentally friendly options for the future, they are real options for car buyers right now, with innovative gadgets and technology to excite and impress.”
“Driving an electric vehicle during the road trip is the perfect way to fully appreciate the capabilities of the technology that is shaping the future of transport and to see first-hand how well the cars handle the open road, especially over long distances,” he added. For all the latest transport news from the UAE and Gulf countries, follow us on Twitter and Linkedin, like us on Facebook and subscribe to our YouTube page, which is updated daily.
