The new screens form part of an agreement penned in 2016 with French multinational Thales to equip Emirates’ fleet of 777X aircraft – the first of which are due to be delivered next year – with its Avant in-flight entertainment system.

Passengers on Emirates airline Boeing 777X aircraft will be able to watch TV shows and films on 4K screens from 2020, according to Patrick Brannelly, the airline’s vice president of customer experience, in-flight entertainment and connectivity.

In an interview with Arabian Business, Brannelly said that “high quality, 4K” screens would be available in approximately 14 months, in 2020.

“That’s standard now,” he said. “TV is about picture quality and sound quality.”

The new screens form part of an agreement penned in 2016 with French multinational Thales to equip Emirates’ fleet of 777X aircraft – the first of which are due to be delivered next year – with its Avant in-flight entertainment system.

“Part of our investment in the new IFE system is larger screens to ensure our customers always have a superior viewing experience,” Brannelly said.

Although Brannelly did not give specifics as to the dimensions of the new screens, Thales has noted that the Avant system offers airlines screens ranging in size between 9 and 32 inches.

The agreement signed in 2016 covers Emirates in-flight entertainment and connectivity systems for its first Boeing 777X aircraft.

A subsequent agreement between Emirates and Thales in 2017 saw the French company agree to equip the 777X fleet with broadband connectivity with speeds of 50 megabits per second (Mbps).
