Fujairah ruler Sheikh Hamad bin Mohammed Al Sharqi has committed to expanding the Port of Fujairah as part of UAE’s Vision 2021 and Centennial 2071 initiatives.
Sheikh Hamad highlighted the growing economic importance of the port as a regional and international bunkering and energy hub.
The ruler made the remarks while inspecting the ongoing development at the port in the presence of Sheikh Mohammed bin Hamad bin Mohammed Al Sharqi, Crown Prince of Fujairah.
Sheikh Hamad said in comments published by state news agency WAM that development of the port has been ongoing for decades, adding that current plans include the deepening of berths and the establishment of quays and storage areas to increase its capacity and enable the arrival of larger vessels.
He added that all measures are being taken to safeguard the oil investments in the port's area.
Sheikh Hamad also revealed ongoing efforts to enter strategic investment partnerships conducive to bolstering the port as a global bunkering hub.
The port's additional operational capacity – including the installation of advanced cargo-lifting equipment - should be brought online by 2021, he added.
On Sunday, Fujairah denied reports of explosions at the Port of Fujairah, saying operations were normal. For all the latest transport news from the UAE and Gulf countries, follow us on Twitter and Linkedin, like us on Facebook and subscribe to our YouTube page, which is updated daily.
