Bahraini lawmakers call for new airport terminal opening to be delayed - report

MPs say the new facility is not ready to open by the deadline set for Q3 2019

Bahraini lawmakers call for new airport terminal opening to be delayed - report
The new terminal at Bahrain International Airport is scheduled to open in Q3, 2019.

A group of Bahraini lawmakers are pushing the government to delay the opening of the kingdom’s new airport terminal, claiming it will not be ready in time for the deadline set for the third quarter of this year, according to a report by the Gulf Daily News (GDN) website.

Members of parliament (MPs) who are part of the parliament’s public utilities and environment affairs committee will meet with the Transportation and Telecommunications Minister Kamal Ahmed and Works, Municipalities Affairs and Urban Planning Minister Essam Khalaf later this month to discuss the issue, the report said.

The new terminal at Bahrain International Airport is scheduled to open in Q3, 2019. “It is impossible to have the new airport opened next month,” MP Mohammed Al Abbasi, was quoted as saying.

“It is clearly visible that procedures and the systems are not ready, even by just looking at the status of the facility you will know that not everything is ready. These matters should not be rushed to meet the October deadline.

The MP has proposed delaying the opening until January 2020.

His concerns were echoed by other MPs, such as committee chairman MP Abdulrazzak Al Hattab, who said the opening date was overly ambitious but he hoped the facility would open by the end of the year.
