Sao Paulo state governor Joao Doria has called on Dubai’s Emirates airline to add an additional flight to the Brazilian state to boost business ties with Dubai.

Emirates currently operates daily return flights to Sao Paulo airport from Dubai.

Doria’s call comes as high-level officials from both countries have vowed to expand business ties.

This week saw a Dubai-Sao Paulo Business Forum that included Doria and Dubai Chamber of Commerce and Industry chairman Majid Saif Al Ghurair.

Following the meeting, investment promotion agency Invest Sao Paulo and Dubai Chamber signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to increase knowledge sharing between the two entities and businesses in both places.

According to Doria, 25 percent of Sao Paulo’s exports were bound for the UAE in 2019, while 30 percent of the state’s imports came from the UAE.

He added that the UAE has surpassed Italy to become one of the state’s top trading partners.

“Dubai Chamber is building strong relationships with Brazil, and our representative office in Sao Paulo is a testament to our efforts to expand trade links with the Latin American country,” Al Ghurair said. “We are fully committed to provide all necessary support to ensure that relations between Dubai and Sao Paulo continue to develop and flourish in the future.”

Brazil is one of Dubai’s largest trading partners in Latin America with bilateral non-oil trade reaching $1.5 billion in 2018. There are more than 130 Brazilian companies registered with Dubai Chamber.
