A number of passengers tested positive for Covid-19 after travelling from Pakistan through Dubai to Hong Kong.

Emirates airline has suspended scheduled passenger services from Pakistan after a number of passengers tested positive for Covid-19.

In a statement, an Emirates spokesperson said that “following the announcement of positive Covid-19 cases in Hong Kong relating to certain passengers who travelled on our flights, Emirates has taken the decision to temporarily suspend passenger services from Pakistan from June 24, 04:00 Pakistan [time].”

According to media reports, 26 passengers tested positive for Covid-19 on an Emirates flight to Hong Kong on June 20, all of whom had travelled from Pakistan and passed through Dubai.

Emirates had earlier re-started scheduled service to Islamabad, Lahore and Karachi.

“We are coordinating closely with the various authorities and will review and implement any required additional measures to satisfy all parties before we resume services from Pakistan,” the Emirates spokesperson said. “We remain committed to serving our customers in Pakistan and are working hard to resume services as soon as possible.”

In the meantime, the spokesperson added, Emirates will continue to operate repatriation flights to Pakistan as per the previously announced schedule, as well as cargo services.

To date, there have been more than 188,000 confirmed cases of Covid-19 in Pakistan, including 3,755 deaths and over 77,000 recoveries.
