Latest STR data shows how Khabib v Poirier fight led to a huge increase in occupancy and RevPAR in UAE capital
The UFC championship fight between Russian star Khabib Nurmagomedov and American Dustin Poirier saw hotel occupancy rates soaring in Abu Dhabi as fans descended on the UAE capital.
According to STR’s preliminary September 2019 data for Abu Dhabi, the market's largest daily increase in occupancy (up 33.1 percent) on September 7, the day of the fight.
The same day saw the second-highest daily jump in revenue per available room (RevPAR) - up by 37.3 percent.
Nurmagomedov, a fan favourite in the Middle East, was awarded one of the coveted “performance of the night” honours for his victory over American Dustin Poirier after beating him by submission in the third round. With the victory, Nurmagomedov cemented his place as the UFC’s lightweight champion.
STR analysts said other events helped overall performance during the month as well including InnoPack 2019 and CPhI Middle East and Africa and the 79th FIP World Congress of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences.
STR's data indicated significant growth in demand due to a strong events calendar.
Based on daily data from September, Abu Dhabi reported a 4.2 percent increase in supply against a 12.9 percent jump in demand.
Occupancy for the month rose 8.3 percent to 72.9 percent while average daily rate (ADR) increased by 1.2 percent to AED341.72 and RevPAR soared by 9.6 percent to AED249.03.
