Trend Micro offers protection in triplicate

IT security specialist Trend Micro has announced its first significant product offering since it acquired InterMute, unveiling three anti-spyware and anti-grayware software titles under its 'Anti-Spyware' banner.

IT security specialist Trend Micro has announced its first significant product offering since it acquired InterMute, unveiling three anti-spyware and anti-grayware software titles under its 'Anti-Spyware' banner.

Trend’s Anti-Spyware series comprises three products and offers consumers and businesses of all sizes what Trend Micro claims is "immediate protection" against some of today’s most insidious spyware programs.

Designed to operate alongside various anti-virus and security software, the three versions of Anti-Spyware can be used alone or as part of a business’s layered defense strategy, at multiple points in the network.

“As promised, Trend Micro has executed quickly following our recent acquisition of InterMute, continuing our momentum around providing customers with top-quality solutions against spyware,” said Eva Chen, CEO of Trend Micro. “These three solutions provide the superior technology, global expertise and timely support that customers have come to expect from a pioneer in the security field. With Trend Micro, customers can get anti-spyware protection that easily complements their anti-virus solutions, providing opportunities to adopt integrated security solutions now and in the future.”

Trend Micro’s three Anti-Spyware products begin at the consumer/small business end, with ‘Trend Micro Anti-Spyware 3.0’. This easy-to-use PC-centric solution features fast definition updates, low system memory usage, and Trickle Scan technology to help minimise CPU utilisation so that the program runs as efficiently as possible in the background, without slowing down the PC in question.

The software actively monitors over 150 so-called ‘touchpoints’ on the user’s system to look for spyware behaviors. Trend Micro Anti-Spyware is already available online but - like the two titles below - will be available in this region's stores from mid-July.

SMB operations meanwhile can consider Trend’s ‘Anti-Spyware for Small and Medium Businesses 3.0’. This includes numerous automated features such as the automatic discovery of unprotected computers, silent installation, and timely updates. The package is also tailored to be particularly easy-to-use fr organisations with limited IT resources. If a firm does have an IT administrator on-board however, they will be able to centrally deploy and manage the software remotely via a web-based dashboard, which offers visibility and control throughout the company.

Enterprise-level corporates are being targeted with Trend Micro’s ‘Anti-Spyware Enterprise Edition 3.0 ‘. Whilst offering many of the same features as the two products listed above, this product also allows greater administrative flexibility and reporting. The solution also complements Trend’s previously announced multi-layered anti-spyware strategy by providing a non-integrated desktop option to customers not yet ready to replace their existing desktop anti-virus software.

“Last month the Middle East saw the highest level of virus infections for almost two years,” said Justin Doo, managing director of Trend Micro in the Middle East and Africa. “Hackers are becoming increasingly sophisticated, and with malware and spyware now working in tandem, it is an extremely worrying time for businesses who value their information. Trend Micro’s new Anti-Spyware solutions will counteract these destructive activities, and give the weight of advantage right back to Middle East businesses.”

Trend Micro’s product announcement follows hot on the heels of another security software launch last week by Computer Associates.

CA launched eTrust Anti-Spam. This anti-spam and fraud detection solution is aimed squarely at the region’s small to medium size businesses (SMBs) and blocks unwanted and unsolicited e-mails by building and managing an approved list of senders. It has also been created with the dual-aim of preventing ‘phishing’, a method used by hackers to send spoofed e-mails with the aim of duping recipients into providing personal information such as their credit card numbers.
