A new Turkish airline has taken to the skies that will initially operate regional flights, but plans to serve international destinations in the near future.
IZair is a two-class carrier owned by 14 Izmiri businessmen under the leadership of Ekrem Demirtas, the president of Izmir Chamber of Commerce, which launched on June 26 from Izmir’s Adnan Mederes Airport.
The carrier currently operates three A319 aircraft and flies to Istanbul, Ankara, Diyarbakir and Adana. Additional services are available from Ankara to both Bodrum and Antalya.
“IZair’s establishment is based on the motive for accommodating the need to fly directly from Izmir to the other major cities, both in Turkey and abroad,” explained Demirtas, whose official title is president, IZair Executive Board.
He said the A319 air-craft were capable of fly-ing non-stop from Izmir to destinations within a 3090-mile radius, such as India or Iceland, and that by 2010, IZair planned to have leased 20 aircraft in total.
The carrier’s branding strategy is being managed by the Dubai branch of international brand consultancy firm, Landor Associates.
The company created a blue and orange logo and livery to reflect Izmir’s summer sky and warm sunset. These colours “swaying in Izmir’s breeze” were the inspiration for the tail fins of the plane, explained John Brash, creative director, Landor.
“What the airline wants to do is reflect Izmir as a place. The seabreeze is very important to Izmir as it reduces the temp in summer, and the livery will be based on that,” he said.
“A lot of people think Izmir is a tourist place only, but there is a lot [of business and trade] happening there. This is a growing region and the airline is being aligned with brand Izmir.”
The airline is a welcome addition to the Turkish aviation industry he added, because to date, other Turkish airlines had been based in Istanbul, which limited consumer choice. For all the latest business news from the UAE and Gulf countries, follow us on Twitter and Linkedin, like us on Facebook and subscribe to our YouTube page, which is updated daily.
