UAE to build $15m coast guard base for the Seychelles

Base at Ile Perseverance will accommodate a helicopter and coast guard vessels.

The United Arab Emirates will build a $15 million coast guard base for the Seychelles, said the island country’s president, James Michel.

The base will be built on Ile Perseverance and will accommodate a helicopter and coast guard vessels, Michel said in an e-mailed statement today. Building will be completed within 10 months, according to the statement, which didn’t include details of the UAE’s role in the project.

The Indian Ocean nation “will now be better equipped to fight pirates and the new radar surveillance system will ensure safe passage for fishermen and other maritime traffic,” Michel said.

The Seychelles has been receiving assistance from the U.S., the European Union and other nations to fight Somalia-based pirates in its waters.
