UAE minister up on fraud charges named

Minister of State Khalifa Bakheet Al Falasi alleged to have mishandled assets - report.

The UAE government minister facing charges of breach of trust and fraud has been named as Minister of State Khalifa Bakheet Al Falasi.

Al Falasi, who was previously UAE ambassador to Australia, is alleged to have mishandled the assets of his business partner’s brother, according to Zawya Dow Jones, citing senior government officials.

The case brought against Al Falasi by his partner, a Lebanese woman, has been referred to court by Dubai Public Prosecution.

Dubai's attorney general, Essam Al-Humaidan, said last week that an unnamed minister and three alleged associates, among them a US citizen, would be referred to a court on charges also including embezzlement and aiding and abetting a crime.

The case is the latest in a string of fraud scandals to hit Dubai, which have brought into question the level of corporate and political governance in the burgeoning financial hub.

Senior officials said the Dubai government was keen to show it will not tolerate corruption, according to Zawya Dow Jones.
