A joint venture between the UAE's Habtoor Leighton Group (HLG) and Al Jaber Engineering has been awarded a $1.7bn (QR6.15bn) contract for the design and construction of the New Orbital Highway and Truck Route (PO23), Contract 3, near Doha.
The work will be carried out for Ashghal, Qatar's Public Works Authority.
HLG CEO and managing director, Antonio Lopez-Monis, said the new project further strengthened the group's presence in Qatar, where HLG has worked successfully with government clients, such as Kahramaa, since 2009.
He said: "Qatar is a very important market for HLG. We have had a local office in Doha since 2005, and during this time we have been involved in a number of projects perfectly aligned with our expertise and experience.
"The Orbital Highway is a major opportunity for HLG and our joint venture partner Al Jaber Engineering, and we are pleased to have been selected by Ashghal to work in partnership with them to deliver such an important part of national infrastructure for Qatar."
Package 3 of the large-scale urban infrastructure project connects the Mesaieed industrial area and New Port Projects to Salwa Road, and includes a total of approximately 56km of roadworks and five main interchanges that will service the projected increase in the area's traffic.
Design and construction works are expected to take around 36 months to complete. For all the latest construction news from the UAE and Gulf countries, follow us on Twitter and Linkedin, like us on Facebook and subscribe to our YouTube page, which is updated daily.
