UAE scaffolding manufacturers use more aluminium

UAE scaffolding manufacturers are increasingly using aluminium in their products in an attempt to keep up with market demands for innovative equipment, according to KHK Scaffolding.

UAE scaffolding manufacturers are increasingly using aluminium in their products in an attempt to keep up with market demands for innovative equipment, according to KHK Scaffolding.

Despite aluminium being four times more expensive than steel, scaffolding makers are opting more for aluminium because of the extra efficiency it provides the market, such as being lighter to use than steel.

The price per tonne of aluminium currently stands at around US $2,500, according to figures from the London Metal Exchange.

"There are many challenges in the market - things here used to be relatively simple, but not anymore. We constantly have to upgrade our equipment," said Anil Taurani of KHK Scaffolding and Formwork.

"We're now making a lot of scaffolding with aluminium, which is very good - it's four times more expensive, but four times lighter. There is a high demand for aluminium in Dubai."

KHK formed a joint venture with German formwork company, MEVA, last year, with the aim of providing a hi-tech range of formwork systems to construction markets in the Middle East.

Taurani added: "The market is maturing in the Middle East. There are a lot of health and safety standards that need to be looked after. That's why German products are sold more - the contractor is realising that they need to use good quality products; they need faster delivery and a good, reliable system."
