Telecoms regulator says total number of registrations top 121,300 after increase in past six months
The UAE’s Telecommunications Regulatory Authority on Sunday announced that the number of registrations for the .ae website domain name has surged over the past six months.
The telecoms regulator said registrations have risen to more than 121,300, meaning that the UAE ranks first in the region for the number of local domain name registrations.
"This apparent increase provides hard evidence that the prevalence of Arabic e-content is rising. The significant increment points to a wider spread of Arabic content on the web, which is one of the country's main strategic goals, said a statement published by news agency WAM.
The surge of registrations has also been accompanied by a similar rise in demand for registration on the .emirate domain, the statement added.
Mohamed Nasser Al Ghanim, director-general of TRA, said: "This significant increment in the number of registrations on the national domain of .ae is an indication of the quality of this service, and its amplified importance in helping registered companies reach out to a wider targeted community, according to the nature of business.
"We are confident that the demand rates for registration with the national domains will maintain gaining more momentum, due to its capacity to meet the users’ needs, and its role to keep intellectual property rights."
.aeDA, the regulatory body and registry operator for the .ae domain, a subsidiary of TRA, was created to manage the national domain.
