A trio of UAE start-ups has beaten more than 70 applicants from 18 countries to be accepted into new incubation scheme Afkar.me.
Run by digital solutions company Intigral, Afkar.me purports to be the region’s first full spectrum digital orientated start-up incubator, and invited new businesses to take part in a competition to be the scheme’s first intake.
Winning entry - as well as prize money of $20,000 each – were snack box idea Bite Sized, evening gown provider TheDressRoom.com, and e-learning concept TheCurve.me.
The winning applicants were selected by judges from a shortlist of ten following a two-day boot camp in Dubai which involved mentoring and development of their ideas, business cases and pitches from Afkar.me’s partners, and a series of elevator pitches to the judging panel.
Juan Jose Del La Torre, VP of digital at Intigral and lead judge, said: “We were very pleased with the overall quality of entries for Afkar.me’s first intake.
“It was not easy to pick just three from the final ten shortlisted start-ups, but we are confident that each idea will not only positively benefit from both the cash injection and incubation at our offices, but bring true market led innovation to the region, benefiting the wider digital ecosystem.”
Also on the judging panel were director of strategy at DubaiSME, Alexander Matthew Williams, and chief innovation officer at Leo Burnett MENA, Yousef Tuqan.
As well as the $20,000 funding, each of the winning teams will receive management support from Intigral, external mentor support, free space at Intigral’s Dubai and Riyadh offices, and advice and support on a variety of topics including product development, design, marketing and PR, business development, legal support. For all the latest business news from the UAE and Gulf countries, follow us on Twitter and Linkedin, like us on Facebook and subscribe to our YouTube page, which is updated daily.
