Vendors focus on seamless wireless connectivity

Motorola and NEC America have announced plans for a collaboration, which will facilitate the convergence of wireless LANs, VoIP and cellular communications.

While the rollout of public and private wireless networks continues, vendors are increasingly turning their attention to the creation of a seamless wireless network. The goal is to enable users to move between their enterprise local area network (LAN), their GSM network and any public hotspots. Motorola and NEC America are the latest companies to announce plans for a collaboration, which will facilitate the convergence of wireless LANs, voice over IP (VOIP) and cellular communications. Under the collaboration Motorola’s core seamless mobility components, which include a dual system Wi-Fi/cellular phone and mobility manager, will be integrated with NEC’s WLAN infrastructure and ENAX family of enterprise communication platforms.“Together we are seeking to deliver a communication solution that converges cellular networks with WLANs accessed with a single handset,” says Nicholas Labun, vice president & general manager for Motorola’s WLAN seamless mobility business. The vendors are highlighting the accessibility benefits for users, while key business applications, including e-mail, calendars, company directories and enterprise SMS coverage, are also expected to be ported to the platform.“Teaming with Motorola to seamlessly extend the enterprises into the wide area mobile network is a critical component of NEC’s real time solution,” says Mike Rosen, general manager of NEC’s marketing and sales support division. “Converging cellular and WLAN networks on a single handset addresses a significant need and adds greater value for our customers,” he continues.
