Actor Omar Sharif arrives at the world premiere of Black Gold at the Doha Tribeca Film Festival

A
YouTube video clip appearing to show Lawrence of Arabia star Omar Sharif slap
an Egyptian journalist at the Doha Film Festival has gone viral, gaining
hundreds of thousands of hits in just two days.

The
video appears to show the 79-year actor angrily slap the face of a journalist and
reprimand her after she tried to have her photograph taken with him.

Sharif,
who was attending the film festival in support of a special screening of his
1991 film An Egyptian Citizen, can be heard saying: “I have told you I would
get to you afterwards… just put something in your brain.”

Minutes
later Sharif turned around and apologised before posing for a photograph with
the woman.

Several
bystanders have since claimed the incident was a camera trick. “I was there
straight afterwards and spoke to the journalists and press officers there who
all said it wasn’t an actual slap, but a ‘swipe’ and that the woman was fine,”
said journalist Becky Lucas.

Sharif,
who has starred in a string of movie classics including Dr Doctor Zhivago and
Funny Girl, has a history of angry exchanges with strangers. In 2003, the star
received a one-month suspended prison sentence for striking a police officer in
a suburban Parisian casino in July and in 2003 was found guilty of assaulting a
Beverly Hills parking lot attendant and breaking his nose.
