Vista due in Gulf stores ‘mid-February’

Consumer versions of Microsoft’s next-generation operating system Windows Vista should arrive in retail stores in the Gulf region in mid-February rather than on January 30 as originally planned, after the software giant’s partners in the Gulf region requested more time to prepare, a spokesman for the firm said today.

Consumer versions of Microsoft’s next-generation operating system Windows Vista should arrive in retail stores in the Gulf region in mid-February rather than on January 30 as originally planned, after the software giant’s partners in the Gulf region requested more time to prepare, a spokesman for the firm said today.

Microsoft Gulf originally aimed to get Vista into shops by the end of January so as to remain in line with the company’s worldwide launch schedule, however the firm’s spokesman told Windows Middle East this afternoon that some partners asked the firm "to push this a little, in order for them to develop a proper plan, so we did.”

A telephone straw poll of retail outlets in the UAE by Windows magazine's team today found that many retail partners, including some well-known ‘power retailers’, were unsure of the exact date they would be receiving Vista copies; a sales representative for one store could only suggest, “perhaps next month”.

This latest regional delay is hardly the first for the OS, Microsoft’s first such release in six years. Vista was originally scheduled for worldwide launch in 2006.
