VIVA to become third Bahraini mobile operator

STC announces new competitor for Batelco and Zain

Saudi Telecommunications Company (STC) has announced that the newest entrant on the Bahraini mobile operator scene will be called VIVA.

VIVA will begin commercial operations in the next few weeks, according to a report in the Gulf Daily News. It will provide competition for incumbent players Batelco (Bahrain Telecommunications Company) and Kuwaiti giant Zain.

"VIVA carries many hopes to elevate services in telecommunications to a new level as it has done in other regions," said STC Bahrain project head Ibrahim bin Abdulrahman Al Omar, according to the newspaper.

"It carries these hopes with a clear voice and a solid will to bring its global experience and triumphs to the kingdom.

"We have already started to bring in large investments to develop infrastructure and to push forward the Bahraini market. We are doing this through various means, be it voice, data transfer or high-speed Internet," Al Omar added.

STC was granted a licence to operate mobile services in Bahrain during January last year for $230 million.
