After winning the second fixed line licence, Vodafone and the Qatar Foundation consortium has stated that it will also offer WiMAX services to its customers.
The decision to package WiMAX with the fixed line licence was made by ictQATAR, the country’s telecom regulator, according to its executive director William Fagan.
“Qatar is too small for a WiMAX operator to compete with two fixed line operators,” Fagan told Qatar daily Gulf Times.
“We thought if the second operator can combine the WiMAX with the fibre that is going to be put into Lusail and The Pearl Qatar among other places, we can complement the two services,” Fagan added.
Qtel has already been granted the license to offer WiMAX in the country and the latest decision by ictQATAR will encourage healthy competition in the market. For all the latest tech news from the UAE and Gulf countries, follow us on Twitter and Linkedin, like us on Facebook and subscribe to our YouTube page, which is updated daily.
