vPro technology gets extended to laptops

Intel is extending its vPro management platform to laptops in the second quarter under the Centrino Pro brand, it announced last week.

Intel is extending its vPro management platform to laptops in the second quarter under the Centrino Pro brand, it announced last week.

The chip giant said the technology, introduced on desktops last year, would allow IT departments to deal with security threats, cost of ownership, resource allocation and asset management wirelessly over WiFi.

"Intel Centrino Pro processor technology brings the best of our offering with Intel vPro processor technology and adds it right into our highly successful Intel Centrino band for laptops," said Mooly Eden, vice president of Intel's Mobile Products Group.

One of the key technologies in vPro - and now Centrino Pro - is Intel's Active Management Technology (AMT), which allows IT managers to turn on, diagnose and repair a networked PC remotely, even if the PC is damaged.

Intel admitted AMT's capabilities would be limited over a virtual private network (VPN) or when connected wirelessly; to get the most out of AMT a laptop would need to be in its docking station.

The launch of Centrino Pro has been timed to coincide with the introduction of the next generation Centrino processor technology, codenamed Santa Rosa.
