VXL International chases emerging thin client market

Joint venture operation opens up in DIC to deliver to total thin client solutions to local organisations

VXL International is looking to capitalise on the growing wave of thin client installations in the region. The thin client specialist — a joint venture between VXL and ITC International — opened its office in DIC approximately two months ago, intending to deliver hardware and software based thin client solutions to the region.

“If we had tried to come to the region and sell these solutions three years ago it would have been too early,” says N. K. Rajasekharan, vice president, sales & marketing, VXL International.

“However, there is a growing acceptance of an alternative model to client/server environments. We have a great deal of experience at building these solutions and tailoring them for the local market,” he adds.

Both parties in the VXL International venture are Citrix gold partners, and can call on an experienced pool of engineers back in India to deliver solutions.

VXL brings its experience in designing and building industry specific thin client terminals. ITC International for its part, adds software and services capabilities, including a distribution partnership with Tarantella.

Tarantella enables end user organisations to rapidly web enable existing systems, by acting as a middleware layer between backend systems and thin client frontend devices.

“The thin client model of computing can give life to any existing hardware,” explains Mike Hansen, product manager with VXL International. “Users have to remember that the purchase cost of a PC is just 25% of the total lifecycle cost of a PC,” comments Hansen.

Although the region has demonstrated more willingness to deploy thin client solutions over recent months, there is still an educational hill to be climbed, says Hansen. “It’s a fact that many users like having a PC… even if many of them don’t actually need them,” says VXL International’s product manager.

“The thin client model is a better solution for a number of reasons; they make the rollout and management of applications much easier and also they make the management of data and users in the environment easier,” he adds.

VXL International is currently in the process of appointing resellers around the region to enable it to deliver solutions across the Gulf. In the short term the service resources based in India will deliver solutions.
