Sir Tim Berners-Lee, the man who founded the world-wide web, will be one of the guest speakers at the two-day World Forum for Foreign Direct Investment, which takes place in Sharjah next week.

The global event, now in its 12th year, has been held in major cities around the world, including Philadelphia (2014) and Shanghai.

“This is the first time that it is being held in the Middle East,” Elie Armaly, director of business development for Sharjah Investment and Development Authority (Shurooq) told Arabian Business.

Armaly, describing Berners-Lee as “one of the great innovators in the world”, said his talk would focus on tech strategy for business.

“We were very much interested in him because the speech that he is going to give has to do with how the world wide web these days works in parallel with FDI agencies and countries wanting to bring in FDIs. It's going to be something that's very interesting for the audience,” said Armaly.

The session with Berners-Lee, on Monday next (February 9), will be moderated by Frank Gardiner, security correspondent for the BBC.

The other major speaker, on Tuesday next (February 10), is Peter Mandelson, the former UK government minister and aide to Tony Blair.

“As a previous government official, and an advisor to Tony Blair, this is something that he will focus on - how to attract top talent into FDI,” said Armaly.

Robin Chase, founder of Buzzcar, the largest car-sharing company in the world and Gurcharan Das, management consultant former CEO of Proctor and Gamble in India, will also speak at the event.

Other well-known people due to take part in the two-day event include Mark Beer, DIFC Courts and David Hamod, president US Arab Chamber of Commerce.

Registration for the forum is through the event website: www.worldforumforfdi.com
