Wireless Net on its way

Advanced wireless Internet services are on their way — Etisalat will trial WAP applications in Q3 this year on a test GPRS network built by Alcatel. The solution will include all the necessary network infrastructure and handsets capable of supporting WAP and GPRS.

GPRS is a technology upgrade to today’s mobile phone networks that will dramatically increase data transfer speeds. WAP is a standard used to deliver data services to mobile handsets.

Taken together, the technologies would allow Etisalat to offer advanced wireless or mobile Internet services. Advanced applications that will be tested include unified messaging services (UMS), remote access to enterprise applications and location-based technologies.

“The Alcatel GPRS solution is now at deployment level, opening up the way for the mobile Internet,” said Pierre Tournassoud, vice president of Alcatel mobile switching activities.

“Our strategic relationship with Etisalat will allow their subscribers to fully benefit from the best of both the Internet and the mobile worlds.”
