Work has started on preparing the site of Al Maryah Central, a $1.5 billion mixed-use project in Abu Dhabi which is due to be completed in 2018.

Contractor NSCC International said it has begun the site preparation and mobilisation for the construction of foundations and piling works for the development, to be built on Al Maryah Island.

The 3.1 million sq ft project, due for completion in the first quarter of 2018, will include a 2.3 million sq ft shopping mall housing the region's first Macy's and Abu Dhabi's first Bloomingdale's.

The development will also feature two, 400,000 sq ft integrated towers comprising a mix of hotel, serviced and residential apartments and luxury residences.

Foundation works that have just started include the installation of 898 rotary bored piles, drilled to depths ranging up to 23.1 metres.

The piling works contract was awarded to NSCC International by developer Gulf Related Sowwah Retail Ltd in April.

Phase 1 of Al Maryah Central will comprise 400 stores, 90 food and beverage outlets, a 20-screen cinema, a medical centre, a creche, health club, a public library, and food market. The development will also deliver three rooftop parks on top of the mall.
