Country: Saudi Arabia
Professor Samira Islam has won an impressive number of firsts; first Saudi woman to gain both bachelor and doctorate degrees; first Saudi of either gender to become a professor in pharmacology; the first Arab woman to be nominated as one of UNESCO’s Scientists of the Year; and the first Saudi woman to hold an official position at the World Health Organisation.
In addition to all of that, Islam has been a driving force behind allowing women to enter further education in Saudi Arabia, and was the first female vice dean in a Saudi university. Few people have done more to advance the cause of female education in Saudi Arabia.
Professor Islam has also made it in the list of this year’s Top 20 Most Influential Women in Science in the Islamic World by Muslim-Science.com.
