UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has been fined for not wearing a seatbelt while sitting in a moving car.
Sunak had been visiting the north of England to promote economic policies and recorded a short Instagram video to share with his more than a million followers.
In the video, now deleted, Rishi Sunak could be seen turning to the camera and clearly not wearing a seatbelt.
Rishi Sunak fined
UK law says a passenger caught failing to wear a seatbelt in a car, front or back seats, is subject to a fine of £100 ($124). The sum can be increased to £500 ($690) if the case goes to court.
Eagle-eyed critics were quick to notice and the matter was brought to police attention.
The force said: “You will be aware that a video has been circulating on social media showing an individual failing to wear a seatbelt while a passenger in a moving car in Lancashire.
“After looking into this matter, we have today issued a 42-year-old man from London with a conditional offer of fixed penalty.”
A statement from the UK government said: “The prime Minister fully accepts this was a mistake and has apologised. He will of course comply with the fixed penalty.”
