You snooze you lose

With the Dubai road network cracking under the pressure following the mass return from vacations, and with normal working hours resumed after Ramadan, it is time to concentrate on building your team.

With the Dubai road network cracking under the pressure following the mass return from vacations, and with normal working hours resumed after Ramadan, it is time to concentrate on building your team.

In this thriving business community, where locals and expatriates work hand in hand, there is a great pool of talent ranging from Dubai-based people with market knowledge; internationals looking for a job from overseas; and expats that have taken the initiative to come over and are looking for their first opportunity.

But in this buoyant job market these people have multiple options, so it's essential to ensure you differentiate your company from the competition to secure the number one candidate, not your rival!

How you carry out your selection and interview process is a great representation of what your company will be like to work for, and first impressions count.

It is not simply the case of the candidate selling themselves to you, it's essential that you show them what you have to offer!

With so many different ways to conduct an interview, whichever you opt for, it needs to be pre-planned and consistent. There's the structured approach, the informal and the skills based interview - but which is right? The answer is the one that feels right for you, as long as it means you get your candidate.

I met an interviewee who had a noteworthy experience when she was asked which was more important, to take a call from her mother or continue the meeting with her client. The answer required by the interviewer was to take the call from her mother so as to show the mother due respect.

This type of question in our multi-cultural arena is not surprising. The interviewer was testing to make sure he found someone who held the same values and would feel comfortable with the working environment. Ultimately, he will build a team of like-minded professionals.

Whichever route you go down, don't delay if you meet someone you like - if they're good, they won't be available for long!
